When your witch says netflx and chill.......

The Witches: Although they do not appear often within the play, they are critical to the shaping of Macbeth's future.

If the Witches watched Netflix...
  1. Animaniacs: Episode 62: Slappy and Skippy, the latter of whom is dressed as Buster Bunny, go trick-or-treating at Slappy's arch-nemeses, Walter Wolf, Sid the Squid, and Beanie the Brain-Dead Bison. This would be a show the witches would recommend because they use supernatural powers to trick other characters into doing things they wouldn't normally do. The witches definitely wanted to trick Macbeth. not necessarily into following the prophesy, but they didn't  tell him much about it or answer his question, which left the prophesy open for a lot of interpretation.
  2. Double Double Toil and Trouble:7-year-old Farmer twins Kelly (Mary-Kate Olsen) and Lynn (Ashley Olsen) discover that Aunt Agatha's (Cloris Leachman) supernatural powers are enabled by a mystical moon stone, they set out to wrest the stone away from her. After all, the girls learn that their family's deep financial troubles point to Aunt Agatha, whom they're stunned to learn is a witch. This movie would be a perfect recommendation from the witches because it perfectly characterizes how they use their powers to deceive and cause trouble. The witch in the movie is very similar to the witches because she is to blame for the family's troubles, and the witches in Macbeth can be blamed for Macbeth's ultimate downfall.
  3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Harry Potter has another year at Hogwarts but is persistently troubled by visions with the Dark Lord. Professor Trelawney also prophesizes that neither will live while the other survives, a key part in the movie that gives insight to Harry's future actions like going to the ministry of magic to find the prophesy and running into Voldermort.  The witches would recommend because of their use of prophesying in Macbeth is similar to the way Trelawney prophesy's what will occur in later movies. The witches are manipulative and although they usually speak the truth, most people don't consider the consequences of following what they say. Of course the witches would recommend this movie because Harry's future is so unpredictable that they see an opportunity for some different interpretations.
  4. Simpsons: May,2 1997: In this episode there is a scene in which Lisa holds up a magazine ad in which the number “9” is prominently displayed next to the World Trade Center towers which look like the number “11." The witches would recommend the Simpsons because once again the use of prophesy presents and unpredictable future, but in this case it turns out for the worse. The witches would ultimately take joy in the fact that the prophesy came true, which gives the audience insight to their mischievous actions.

IBArt

    • Artist: Swiss artist Hans Holbein the Younger
    • Title: Armor for Field and Tournament
    • Date:1527
    • Medium: Steel, etched and gilded overall
    • Size: 73in (185.5cm)
  1. Created in 1527 at the Royal Workshops in Greenwich, England during the transition from Renaissance to Neoclassicism. It is considered the earliest surviving Greenwich garniture.
  2. This garniture represents the armor made from a series of exchange and reinforcing pieces that could be used in different ways during battle. The idea is that this armor would be more efficient during battle and would also be adequate enough for other leisure activities such as jousting.
  3. The rustic look of the piece is something that developed with age, but with the etching on the steel and the gilding as well, it features the subtle details of the piece. The piece is arranged in a way so it can be presented to someone as a model. Such an arrangement allows every detail to be viewed so that if it were to be presented back in the 1500's it would be able to be used more as a prototype rather than a piece of art. There are also elements of the piece that would not have typically been included in a knight armor for battle, such as the ventral plate which was worn under the breast plate to decrease the amount of weight supported by the shoulder. This is something that was seen in only one other piece of armor. Features such as this enhance the meaning because they show the difference between pieces of armor made for battle and armor made for jousting. It also shows the influence that the king had on what the knights wore and how they we able to respond in battle.
  4. This model was created because Henry VII requested it either for himself or to be shown to the French ambassador Francois de La Tour d'Auvergne viscount of Turenne. This reflects the social values of the time because this piece was created at the order of Henry VII, which presents the concept of social hierarchy known as Feudalism at that time. The king was on top and the Knights were right above the peasants. The meaning of this piece is to show kings had anything and anyone at their disposal and they were able to use that to their advantage in any situation. I came to this conclusion through reading that this piece was created because King Henry VII ordered it to be made, which emphasizes just how influential the king was in the feudal system. Another theme addressed would be the knights role in society. Even though they were not very high in the feudal system, through this piece there is a sense that knights are very important because they were highly valued in battle and were often treated better than other citizens. In a way they also played the role of police officer in society because they upheld the law. Materialistically this artwork is very valuable because it  is the earliest surviving Greenwich garniture. This piece signifies something different today because it is viewed as a piece of art rather than a prototype that would have been used to present a new idea.

You Have Been Smited!!!

Advertisement: Burger King Whopper Sacrifice
Author: John Schaufelberger, Mike Kappitt
Date of Publication: January 5, 2009
Place of Publication: California

From just looking at this advertisement the viewer can tell that Burger King is trying to increase profit sales for the Whopper so they have decided to create a competition called the "Whopper Sacrifice." The purpose of the competition is to go onto Facebook and unfriend 10 friends. After that you get a coupon for a free burger. The viewer can also see that Burger King used the common advertising technique of bribery, bribing their customers with a free sandwich if they unfriend 10 friends. The deeper purpose of this advertisement is to prove that relationships mean virtually nothing when there is a bribe involved. People would "sacrifice" their friends over a $.37 sandwich. It also suggest that society is in a better relationship with technology and social media sites, than which actual living creatures.

The intended audience for this advertisement is for  young to middle age adults who use Facebook regularly and anyone who would enjoy a free whopper. Their social background would be someone who is probably not famous, but would feel as if they accomplished something if they complete this challenge. A person of a high economic background probably wouldn't be interested is partaking in this completion, but anyone else is fair game. The audience has some idea that this advertising is appealing to them because of the flaming design and the over emphasis on the word whopper. This advertisement also communicates how well mass media manipulates the audience into doing almost anything, including unfriending 10 friends on Facebook.

Name Game

Sydney has many different meanings depending on where you are from. In Greek Sydney means from Sidon (Sidon is a city in Lebanon). The English meaning of Sydney is wide island: south of the water. The Sydney that my parents chose was the English meaning of Sydney because around the time that I was born the Olympics were set to be held in in Sydney Australia which is a wide island south of England (wow so creative). I do not think that my name defines me because it is predominantly used to describe a place rather than a unique set of characteristics. My middle name Nicole would be a better way to describe me because Nicole means people's victory and typically people with this name tend be better at managing and at saving money. People with the name Nicole also strive for others to achieve peace and harmony, which is very fitting for me because one thing that I really try to push for in this world is religious equality.

There is a quote that talks about the different faces that humanity has. One face we show the world, one we show to our friends and family, and the other one we do not show to anyone but ourselves. It is the third face that reflects our true nature. The times when there have been two me's have only showed up in school especially when I have to be around people that I do not really care to be around. The other Sydney that does not show up at school is the Sydney that is really only seen around her friends and family. In our society, attempting to be an individual is something that is very hard to do. You want to stand out and be different, but with so many people, you are expected to fit into more of a social norm rather than to stand out. That doesn't mean that you are not an individual, it just means that your individuality is something that you have to cherish and it shouldn't be affected by what other people think. Being part of a larger whole isn't such a bad thing either, because a sense of community is created and then there are more people to appreciate your individuality.

Picture Perfect

We are the Other - Chicago Avenue, South Minneapolis, MN (2012)

The picture that I chose was photographed by Wing Young Huie and is from his We are the Other  collection. This photo was taken in 2012 at Chicago Avenue in South Minneapolis, Minnesota. At first glance all that is seen is an American flag hanging from a flag pole that appears to be in someone's yard. The flag itself is torn and is barely hanging on to the pole. This gives off the idea that the flag has been hanging on that pole for a while and that the residences at that house have probably been there for a while. Looking deeper into this post there is an underlying feeling that this picture is saying that America might seem great right now, but that is only now and now will eventually fade. It is saying that this time of greatness will eventually come to an end.

Based on the picture I selected, Wing Young Huie presents the concept of "othering" through the format in which the picture was taken and in the way that the color presents itself in the picture. This picture was taken from an angle with the camera facing more towards the sunlight that was blocked by the house. This format places more emphasis on the area surrounding the flag than the flag itself aiding the concept of "othering" by taking away the importance of the flag which is suppose to be the main focus of the picture. He also presents the concept of "othering" through the color in the photo. The color within the picture is not very saturated creating a washed out effect. This presents the concept of "othering" because the  faded appearance represents how groups of people or places are treated as if their differences are something that sets them aside in  a negative manor.

Margaret Atwood presents the concept of "othering" through the reoccurring implication of social classes throughout the book. There is a clear distinction of social classes within the The Handmaid's Tale. The highest class of women are the wives, and then the handmaids, aunts, Martha's, econowives, and at the very bottom, the unwomen. The handmaids are taught from day one that one does not want to end up being declared an unwoman or even being an econowife: "Go to the Colonies, Rita said. They have the choice. With the Unwomen, and starve to death and Lord knows what else" (Atwood, 10). The tone of Rita in this quote gives the audience the impression that the Unwomen are inferior to everyone else and because of this they are the group that is alienated in the Republic of Gilead.
